School veil row teacher sacked
A MUSLIM teaching assistant suspended for refusing to remove her veil in class has been sacked.
Aishah Azmi, 24, sparked a national row when she took her council to a tribunal claiming religious discrimination.
PM Tony Blair said the veil was a “mark of separation” and could see why she was suspended.
She refused to back down and the governors of Headfield C of E Junior School in Dewsbury, West Yorks, have now terminated her contract.
Kirklees Council leader Robert Light said: “They made the right decision.”
Most parents backed the move. One father said: “She has acted incredibly stubbornly.”
Kids complained lessons were hard to understand as they could not see Mrs Azmi’s lips moving.
She was told she could wear the veil outside lessons. But she insisted on wearing it all the time.
The tribunal threw out her claim but awarded her £1,100 damages for hurt feelings.
She plans to appeal to Europe which could cost taxpayers £250,000.
