tough battle to quell Muslim unrest

Thailand and Malaysia face a tough battle to quell separatist unrest on their common border following more deadly attacks last weekend, despite fresh peace efforts by the neighbors, analysts said.

The attacks coincided with many Thais’ celebration of the start of Tet, the Lunar New Year, prompting military officials to accuse the militants of trying to frighten ethnic Chinese and Buddhist residents to flee the region.

Muslims account for only 5 percent of Thailand’s population of 65 million and live mostly in the three southern provinces bordering Malaysia.

The strikes came on the heels of Thailand’s agreeing that Malaysia help facilitate peace talks with the shadowy insurgency, which has battled the government for three years. The conflict has killed nearly 2,000 people.

But experts said the attacks, the bloodiest since bombs in Bangkok on New Year’s Eve killed three people, underscored the Muslim militants’ resolve to derail any bilateral efforts to bring peace to the south.

The insurgents “were sending signals that they were not interested in the bilateral peace efforts at all, and also telling the Surayud government that it was not making any progress on [ending] the violence,” said Thitinan Pongsudhirak, a political analyst at Bangkok’s Chulalongkorn University.

Surayud came to power after a military coup last September that ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra. Surayud quickly adopted a conciliatory approach to the rebels, reversing Thaksin’s heavy-handed tactics, because this is the policy choice of the chief of staff of the Thai armed forces, Gen. Sondhi Boonyaratkalin.

General Sondhi led the coup that removed Thaksin and is largely responsible for making Surayud prime minister. He is a Muslim. He had found himself at odds with ousted Prime Minister Thaksin over his hard-line military approach to the Muslim insurgency. General Sondhi’s preference was for peace with his co-religionists to be achieved through negotiations.

Knowledgeable sources have told The Manila Times that what made Sondhi launch the coup was Thaksin’s go-signal to his loyalist generals in the Thai armed forces to mount a coup themselves, replace Sondhi with a Thanksin loyalist and place Thaksin on top of a martial-law government.

Gen. Sondhi’s faction in the military preempted the Thaksin loyalists’ move.

Surayud was himself a former chief of staff. At the time of the coup he was a member of King Bhumibol’s privy council and was known to be one the king’s most trusted advisers.

On becoming PM, Surayud immediately apologized to the Muslim community for past abuses, offered to meet insurgent leaders and proposed a special economic zone in the south, one of the kingdom’s poorest regions.

But almost daily bombings, shootings and arson attacks continue to rock the provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala, all at the Malaysian border.

The rebels’ tactics have turned particularly gruesome this month. A Buddhist ice cream vendor was beheaded in his cart. Parents have been killed in bombings as their terrified children watched.

Signs are already emerging that public patience in the rest of Thailand is wearing thin with Surayud’s softer approach.

The Nation newspaper asked why the government would even “offer to negotiate with brutal insurgents who are actively waging a secessionist war against the Thai state and brutally butchering innocent civilians on a daily basis.”

Even before the latest attacks, efforts to launch peace talks faced an uncertain path, largely because no one knows who the militants are.

The insurgents never claim responsibility for their attacks, and have made no public demands.

“Both the Thai and Malaysian governments have made it clear they are not sure who they should be talking with,” said Francesca Lawe-Davies, an analyst with the International Crisis Group.

“It is going to be a long and complicated process.”

The region has a long history of separatist violence over the century since Thailand annexed what had been an autonomous Malay sultanate.

Veteran separatist groups that spearheaded previous outbreaks of violence in the seventies and the eighties have openly embraced calls for talks. But that has failed to quell attacks which experts and military officials say are being led by radicalized youth.

Three people were arrested Tuesday over the weekend carnage, all of them students in their 20s attending local Islamic schools. Army officials said that during the attacks the militants were drugged on a local plant used as an opium substitute.

Srawut Aree, professor of Muslim studies at Chulalong-korn University, said militants have stepped up their attacks for fear Surayud will succeed in winning the hearts and minds of southern Muslims.

“Surayud is trying to reach out to Muslims, and insurgents are worried that people will side with the government. If this happens, the south problem will be solved quickly. That’s why we are seeing a spike in attacks,” he said.

Department of Justice Examples of Terrorism Convictions Since Sept. 11, 2001

Department of Justice Examples of Terrorism Convictions Since Sept. 11, 2001

Below are examples of some of the convictions obtained by the Department of Justice in terrorism cases since Sept. 11, 2001:

Hassan Moussa Makki (Eastern District of Michigan) – In September 2003, Hassan Makki pleaded guilty to racketeering charges and providing material support to Hizbollah in conjunction with the Mohammed Hammoud case in Charlotte, NC. Defense attorneys said the Pakistani citizen deserved no more than 6 1/2 years in jail.

U.S. District Judge Claude M. Hilton in Alexandria did not explain his reasoning as he imposed the sentence. At the request of prosecutors, he then ordered Chandia, who had been free on bond, into custody.

Chandia, 29, called out in Arabic, " Salaam aleikum ," or "Peace be with you," as he was led out of the courtroom by deputy U.S. marshals. Some of the more than 50 supporters who attended the hearing repeated the greeting and blinked away tears.

Earlier, Chandia, who teaches at a Muslim school in Maryland, had told the judge that he did not "deserve to spend a single day in prison." With his voice shaking and rising in anger, Chandia said: "With Allah as my witness, I tell everyone that I am innocent. . . . God knows that I did not support and would not support any terrorists."

As for the prosecutors who pursued the case, Chandia said, "their judgment is on its way."

The sentencing wrapped up an investigation that has produced more guilty verdicts than any domestic terrorism case since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, but it has also symbolized a national debate over how to keep Americans safe.

The case began in June 2003, when 11 Muslim men were charged in U.S. District Court in Alexandria with training with and fighting for Lashkar-i-Taiba, a group fighting the Indian government that the U.S. government considers a terrorist organization.

Six of the men pleaded guilty, three were convicted at trial and two were acquitted. The group's spiritual leader, Ali al-Timimi, was convicted last year on charges that included soliciting others to levy war against the United States and contributing services to Afghanistan's former Taliban rulers. He was sentenced to life in prison.

Civil libertarians and some Washington area Muslims have derisively called the probe the "paintball case," saying that it targeted Muslim men who never intended to attack the United States. Some members of the group played paintball in the Virginia countryside as part of what prosecutors called their preparation for holy war against U.S. troops.

But the Justice Department has hailed the case as key to the domestic campaign against terrorism, saying that its post-Sept. 11 mandate is to prevent attacks.

A federal jury convicted Chandia in June of three counts of providing material support to Lashkar-i-Taiba or conspiring to do so and acquitted him on a fourth count of supporting terrorists. Prosecutors said Chandia trained at a Lashkar camp in Pakistan and helped the group acquire paintballs and other equipment with potential military applications when he returned to the United States. The equipment included unmanned aerial vehicles, night-vision equipment and wireless video cameras, prosecutors said.

Federal investigators also found a CD-ROM in Chandia's car containing videos that glorified Osama bin Laden and the 19 hijackers who carried out the Sept. 11 attacks, prosecutors said.

The divergent views of the case were evident in the reaction to Chandia's sentencing.

"Terrorist organizations like Lashkar-i-Taiba rely on a network of individuals to carry out their deadly operations," U.S. Attorney Chuck Rosenberg said after the sentencing.

"Ali Asad Chandia was a member of that network for Lashkar-i-Taiba, and he will now spend a very long period of time in prison for providing material support in furtherance of its violent agenda," Rosenberg added.

Marvin D. Miller, an attorney for Chandia, called the sentence "excessive. It's way beyond what is necessary."

He said the 30-years-to-life term sought by the government was "irrational and almost bordering on cultural bias."

The Ali Asad Support Committee, which raised money for Chandia's defense, said in a statement that Chandia "never posed a danger to any American citizen."

"The American government has engaged in policies and practices which are targeting, harassing and persecuting Muslims whose crime seems primarily to be that they are God-fearing people," the statement said. "Ali Asad Chandia has joined those ranks."

But some of Chandia's supporters expressed relief. "Fifteen years is a lot better than life in prison," said Jafar Meredith, a local Muslim who attended the hearing. "We're grateful that it wasn't life."

Suicide bomber wounds 8 at hospital in Afghanistan

Suicide bomber wounds 8 at hospital in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan -- A suicide bomber dressed in a doctor's white coat slipped into a hospital compound in eastern Afghanistan, where he was challenged by police and NATO soldiers before detonating his explosives yesterday. Seven NATO troops and a hospital employee were injured, a local official said.
The suicide bomber initially was stopped by Afghan police as he entered the compound of the main government hospital in the city of Khost, where about 150 people had gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to open an emergency ward.
The bomber fled as he was being questioned, and NATO troops shot him several times before one soldier "wrestled him to the ground, restraining him long enough to allow the crowd of people to move safely away," a NATO statement said.
That soldier was able to break free before the bomber detonated his explosive and sustained only minor injuries, but two other wounded troops were evacuated to a NATO base for treatment, the statement said. The bomber died.
"The people were running everywhere, and it was difficult at first to figure out what was happening," Cpl. Anthony Rush, who saw the attack, was quoted as saying.
The alliance gave no details on the troops' nationalities; Khost provincial Gov. Arsalah Jamal said they were American, and that one hospital employee also was wounded. Most of the NATO forces in eastern Afghanistan are American.

Walid Phares: Iraq Withdrawal a Catastrophe

Leaving Iraq with the job undone would lead to a catastrophe with as much as 30% of the world's oil reserves in the hands of the Islamic jihadists, says the nation's leading expert on Islam.

So says Dr. Walid Phares, author of "Future Jihad: Terrorist Strategies against the West," the most complete work on the history of Islam and the Islamic holy war now being waged against the United States and the West. Phares is a senior fellow at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies and a visiting fellow at the European Foundation for Democracy. He is also the author of "The War of Ideas: Jihad against Democracy." He is a world-renowned terrorism and Middle East expert.

In an exclusive interview with NewsMax, Phares laid out the frightening scenario of a Middle East in turmoil in the wake of a withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq:

"If we get out of Iraq without achieving strategic goals, it would not be just a defeat in Iraq," Phares warned. "It will be a regional defeat. [Iranian President Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad will link up with [Muqtada] al-Sadr in Iraq, he will link up [President Bashar] Assad in Syria, he will link up with Hassan Nasrallah in Lebanon, and you're going to have four countries under one jihadist leadership. Imagine all the resources involved there.

"The Sunni-Salafist-Wahabi element in the Sunni triangle will link with their counterparts in Saudi Arabia, and put pressure on the government, which may fall. So what you're talking about is one-quarter to 30% of oil reserves on both sides of the Persian Gulf under jihadi regimes. What we had with the Taliban -- a very poor regime with no oil –- and just look at what they produced: a 9/11. So, think about what these regimes could do when combined. They'd produce a catastrophe of huge dimensions."

In answer to those who want the United States to enter into negotiations with Syria and Iran, Phares said: "I am opposed to the idea to the idea of negotiating with dictatorships that are at odds with their own people, regimes who have been slaughtering their own people.

"The Bashar Assad regime in Syria killed 20,000 people in Hama and has occupied Lebanon for 32 years. It supports Hezbollah's terrorism. What would be the idea of talking to him? The only talk I could consider would be for him to reform. If he reforms, his regime will fall, because in Syria they want change. Hence, the only talk he would accept would be for us to empower him even further and accept his influence in the region and in Lebanon.

"The same thing would apply to Iran with a with the Ahmadinejad regime. What we need to do is to talk to the people of Syria and Iran. The reformers, the democracy groups, the dissidents, and people who within the regime are ready to change."

Asked to estimate the number of jihadist insurgents worldwide, Phares had some unsettling news.

"It depends on what the duty of such people [insurgents] would be," he told NewsMax. "Suicide bombers would be lower in number than of those who will fight, those who will spy, those who will provide funds. There are about from 5% to 6% to 8% jihadist sympathizers in the Muslim world, which is 1.1 billion, so we are talking about 50 to 60 million who sympathize with these ideas.

"They are all not committed, but out of those you have probably 1% of people who would fight. That's an army of 1 million. Among those, if you want to go to the most narrow dimension, there are about 100,000 suicide bombers around the world. For example, in Iraq there are probably 5,000, in Iran another 8,000 to 10,000, and within Hezbollah, 2,000.

"There is a pool of 100,000 people who have received this jihadist ideology and could be recruited for suicide bombing. Internationally, from an operational standpoint, there are somewhere around 5,000, and that's a huge number of suicide bombers. Look at England, for example the operation of [July 7, 2005 -- the subway bombings] involved eight terrorists The next year, in the operation that wanted to bring down the airliners, there were about 50. So it grows geometrically."

NewsMax: As far as the United States is concerned, aside from suicide bombers, what dangers do we face in terms of weapons of mass destruction?

WP: Here at home there is the penetration by those jihadists of our facilities, both civilian nuclear and biological and military, that's infiltration -- penetration from the outside.

"Then you have another issue, penetration from the inside meaning people who would let themselves be recruited to go inside the grapevine as in the Cold War. But this time, instead of having the bolsheviks, you have the jihadists. We've seen a number of individuals who have been arrested for jihadist activities within the armed forces, for example, the sergeant who threw a grenade in Kuwait, against his own unit. The trainer of Marines. You can see there were indicators. There are also political indicators that they are willing to infiltrate the higher level of government and therefore with this information they could wreak havoc.

"There is a war of ideas now taking place between jihadists trying to mollify the U.S. and public indecision on one hand, and the U.S. and its allies are trying to spread democracy on the other hand, or at least weakening and isolating the jihadist element. So what we have in the war on terror is another war going on -- an ideological war. And that's where the jihadists are making progress. They are taking advantage of pools of young people who have been educated who have been indoctrinated for many years by the greatest jihadists, the oil-producing regimes and their money.

"That investment for many, many years flowing into our educational system has led to the formation of a pool of jihadists or potential jihadists throughout the world. That's where the terrorists recruit from. Most of the guys they get to are already believers in this ideology.

NM: How imminent is the danger of an attack against the United States?

WP: "It is a standing threat in the sense that it's not something that would emerge out of nowhere -- you don't have jihadists being made overnight. You don't have jihadists coming as a reaction to our foreign policy. This is a long process of schools, of madrassas that have been brainwashing the minds of young people.

"The attack is coming as long as the pools are growing, and as long as there are what I call factories producing a brainwashing within America, even though we are in 2007. The last major attack was in 2001. It's only time before they get somewhere. We are good at trying to defend ourselves. We've established Homeland Security, but as long as we don't cut the roots in indoctrination process, the attack is going to come."

NM: Is the border problem involved in the jihad?

WP: "The matter of the U.S.-Mexican border is another phase. The jihadists have been using the border. Mexico by itself is only an extension of the of the areas that jihadists are using, Venezuela for example, all the way down to Argentina. We know that Hezbollah, al-Qaida and other jihadists have been using the U.S.-Mexican border to get in. They will get in and they will stay underground. Once here, they will link up with these cells, which are already established here. The assumption is within the United States, you have about 200 potential suicide bombers. I looked at the literature, taken from those who were arrested, and that literature is available everywhere online. We see it even in book stores in some cities, audiotapes, videotapes, all talking about jihad and the necessity of forming cells. Borders are very important as well, because it's an open door, and they can avoid the long process coming through regular immigration.

NM: Are the American people prepared to meet the jihad?

WP: "The American people by instinct are responding to leaders who say that we are at war. But the American people have a problem, which is its own educational system among its own educators. I have been a professor for 14 years, including 12 at Florida Atlantic University. I've seen how students have been deprived of real information and education, especially before 9/11. Middle East studies, classes in Islamic history, studies that have been influenced and impacted by the Wahabi money, which has been invested in this country -- money from the oil-producing regimes that have been invested on our campuses, thus impacting the professors and teachers.

"What we had over the past 20 years with two generations of Americans who were denied the right to know who the jihadists are. What is Fatah? What is Islamic fundamentalism? It's no wonder America wasn't prepared for 9/11, and no wonder that that's true up until now. The majority of the American people do not really understand what's going on. Basically, they do want to know what's going on, and they are thirsty, they are hungry. So it's up to free media and free intellectuals to help because the mainstream media and mainstream academia is not."

In his book, Phares spells out the problem:

"Whoever will be enabled to shape the minds of Americans as to the identity of the enemy will win the war on terror. The pressure groups active today that denying the existence of the threat are scrambling to counter the growing awareness of the public. Panicked by citizens learning more about jihadism and moderate Muslims taking the stand against Salifism and Khumeinism, Wahabi "lobbies" are moving full steam ahead to misinform the American public.

The networks and interest groups use social institutions and civil rights legislation to advance their aims, while a claim to provide government agencies schools and media with their "expertise" on jihadism. In short, the Wahabi lobby wants to further confuse the American government and the public as the source of the terror: its ideology. And if this goal is achieved the US public will be brought back to a pre-9/11 that will leave them ripe for further attacks."

by Phil Brennan
NewsMax

Why Mohammed was not a prophet

Why Mohammed was not a prophet:

One who claims to be a messenger of God is expected to live a saintly life. He must not be given to lust, he must not be a sexual pervert, and he must not be a rapist, a highway robber, a war criminal, a mass murderer or an assassin. One who claims to be a messenger of God must have a superior character. He must stand above the vices of the people of his time. Yet Muhammad’s life is that of a gangster godfather. He raided merchant caravans, looted innocent people, massacred entire male populations and enslaved the women and children. He raped the women captured in war after killing their husbands and told his followers that it is okay to have sex with their captives and their “right hand possessions” (Quran 33:50) He assassinated those who criticized him and executed them when he came to power and became de facto despot of Arabia. Muhammad was bereft of human compassion. He was an obsessed man with his dreams of grandiosity and could not forgive those who stood in his way. Muhammad was a narcissist like Hitler, Saddam or Stalin. He was astute and knew how to manipulate people, but his emotional intelligence was less evolved than that of a 6-year-old child. He simply could not feel the pain of others. He brutally massacred thousands of innocent people and pillaged their wealth. His ambitions were big and as a narcissist he honestly believed he is entitled to do as he pleased and commit all sorts of crimes and his evil deeds are justified.

Why Quran is not from God:

Muhammad produced no miracles and when pressed he claimed that his miracle is the Quran. Yet a cursory look at the Quran reveals that this book is full of errors. Quran is replete with scientific heresies, historic blunders, mathematical mistakes, logical absurdities, grammatical errors and ethical fallacies. It is badly compiled and it contradicts itself. There is nothing intelligent in this book let alone miraculous. Muhammad challenged people to produce a “Surah like it” or find an error therein, yet Muslims would kill anyone who dares to criticize it. In such a climate of hypocrisy and violence truth is the first casualty.

3,500 Islamists said hiding in Somalia

3,500 Islamists said hiding in Somalia

By MOHAMED OLAD HASSAN

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Remnants of Somalia's Islamic movement still pose a threat in the capital, the interior minister said Thursday, a week after his government and Ethiopian troops chased most of the militiamen from Mogadishu.

"There are 3,500 Islamists hiding in Mogadishu and the surrounding areas and they are likely to destabilize the security of the city," Interior Minister Hussein Aideed said at a news conference.

Aideed did not explain the source of his information or what prompted his comments after Prime Minister Ali Mohamed Gedi said on Tuesday that major fighting had ended and that he expected only minor violence ahead.

At a separate news conference Thursday, Gedi played down the threat and disputed Aideed's figure of Islamists hiding in the capital but did not offer his own estimate.

Gedi said his government would begin efforts to disarm Somalis by seizing large arms caches located around Mogadishu. A house-by-house will follow, the prime minister told journalists, without saying when that will happen.

Thursday was the deadline for people in Mogadishu to surrender their arms. Gedi said the disarmament program was progressing but offered no details.

Over the past 10 days, Somali government troops and Ethiopian forces have routed the Council of Islamic Courts, which had controlled most of southern Somalia. The Islamic movement has vowed to keep fighting, raising the specter of an Iraq-style guerrilla war.

Meanwhile, the top U.S. diplomat to Africa held consultations with African leaders in Ethiopia on how to help Somalia's struggling government establish itself.

"The people of Somalia need to come together," said Jendayi Frazer, assistant secretary of state for Africa. "The Council of Islamic Courts are no longer, though there may be remnants or individuals, and we continue to push for dialogue."

Frazer was expected to meet with African Union officials and Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni later Thursday.

Museveni has offered 1,000 peacekeepers, but Ugandan officials say they need help paying for the operation and a clear exit strategy.

The U.S. government also will consider ways to provide significant new assistance to the Somali government, she said.

With the Islamic movement's fighters on the run, concern has grown about extremists believed to be among them. Three al-Qaida suspects wanted in the 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in East Africa are believed to be leaders of the Council of Islamic Courts. The movement denies having any links to al-Qaida.

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said Wednesday that U.S. Navy vessels deployed off the Somali coast were looking for al-Qaida and allied militants trying to escape.

Aideed said that there are about 12,000-15,000 Ethiopian troops in Somalia, and when peacekeepers arrive in the country the Ethiopians will leave. Ethiopia has put the number much lower, at around 4,000, and said it would pull out within weeks.

Many Somalis fear that when they do, there will be a power vacuum and even a return to the anarchy and warlord rule of the past.

Somalia's last effective central government fell in 1991, when clan-based warlords overthrew military dictator Mohamed Siad Barre and then turned on each other. The government was formed two years ago with the help of the United Nations, but has been weakened by internal rifts.

The intervention of Ethiopia late last month prompted a military advance that was a stunning turnaround for the government.

Iranian Supreme Leader's Hajj Message

Iranian Supreme Leader's Hajj Message

والحمد لله رب العالمین و الصلاﺓ علی سید المرسلین

و علی الله الطیبین و صحبه الصادقین

Once again the Hajj season is back with its spiritual tidings, and again it presents a precious opportunity to the Islamic world. While many eager hearts are attracted from all over the world to attend this annual congregation, there are only a fortunate few who actually realize their dream. This is the reason for the perpetuity of this flowing spring.

On the one hand, the annual congress at the House of the beloved reconnects the hearts with the Kiblah of creation on the other hand, the friends who have been detached from one another find an opportunity for the meeting of hearts. It also brings elation and jubilation to the body, spirituality and politics of the Muslim ummah.

Freedom from material contaminations and remembrance of Allah in all our deeds and in all places, although for a few days, is a great souvenir for hajj pilgrims. The acts of worship and rituals of hajj are for the purpose of providing an opportunity to gain a spiritual experience and sense this joyous experience with our souls.

In the area of politics, the cardinal purpose of hajj is to show the united identity of the Muslim ummah. Detachment and separation among the brothers will open the door to those who bear malice toward us and will serve as a breeding ground for the seeds of division among Muslims.

The Muslim ummah embraces various nations, races and followers of different sects in Islam. This diversity and the vast geographical stretch of the ummah in a sensitive and important part of the planet Earth can be a source of strength. Our diversity has enriched and enhanced the ummah's common heritage, culture, history and their effectiveness in the vast part of the globe, and has enabled them to utilize all forms of talents and human and natural potentials.

From the very first days of their entry into The Islamic countries the Western colonialist powers have taken account of this diversity and have consistently attempted to arouse divisive sentiments.

The colonialist politicians knew well that if a united Islamic identity is formed, the door will be closed to their political and economic domination. Therefore, they have planted seeds of division and discord by employing their concentrated and enduring efforts. To succeed in carrying out this nefarious policy and to advance their goal of domination over the Islamic countries, they have taken advantage of the unawareness of the populace and weakness of the political and cultural leaders in Islamic countries.

Suppression of liberation movements in the Islamic countries over the past century, the success of colonialist powers in consolidating their domination over these countries, creation or strengthening of authoritarian regimes, plundering of their natural wealth and destruction of their human resources and consequently keeping Muslim nations behind the caravan of progress in science and technology, have all been made possible under the shadow of disunity that in some cases reached the levels of internecine and fratricidal conflicts.

With the commencement of Islamic awakening which reached its peak with the emergence of the Islamic republic in Iran, the Western camp faced a formidable threat. The failure of political schools of thoughts of East and West, the recognition of the falsehood and the collapse of the values that were represented by the colonialists as the only road to humanity's happiness helped self-awareness among Muslim masses to take root, and successive frustrations of the arrogant powers in covering and extinguishing this divine radiance have sprung up the seedlings of hope in the hearts of Muslim nations.

A glance at today's Palestine which has a government that has come to power committed to the unchangeable principle of "liberation from Zionist occupation", and comparison of the present situation with the seclusion, isolation and weakness of Palestinian people in the past;

A glance at Lebanon in which the Muslims put their lives on the line to defeat the equipped Israeli army with the all the help that it received from the U.S., the West and other hypocritical powers, and its comparison with the Lebanon that the Zionists could easily encroach upon and move forward without any real obstacles;

A glimpse at Iraq, in which its proud people humiliated the pompous America, and bogged down the army and politicians that boasted of having a free hand in Iraq, in a quagmire  of political, military and economic problems, and its comparison with previous Iraq in which its bloodthirsty leader brutalized its people with the encouragement of the United States;

A glance at today's Afghanistan in which all the promises of the U.S. and the West have turned out to be lies and the unprecedented military expedition of the united front of Western countries have produced nothing, except destruction, poverty, killings and the growing power of the narcotics mafia;

And finally, a glance at the youthful populations of the Islamic countries and the generation with growing tendency toward Islamic values and the rising sentiments against the U.S. and the West;

Looking at all these developments provide us with a clear and true picture of the falling fortunes and the failed policies of the arrogant powers, especially the United States, and augur well for the emergence of the united Islamic identity.

The American government, the domineering capitalism of the West and the corrupt Zionist political lobbyists have begun to sense the living truth of the Islamic awakening, and by admitting that their military might is useless against this truth, they are using all their power to employ political ploys and tactics.

The entire Muslim ummah, whether the political, cultural and religious elite, or the masses of people, must remain vigilant more than ever before, and try to identify and foil the conniving schemes of the enemy.

One of the most effective schemes of the enemy is to incite the flames of discord and division. By spending money and rushing to put to use whatever they have in their power, they try to keep Muslims engaged in feuding and quarreling over their differences and once again to set us against one another by exploiting our negligence, narrow-mindedness and prejudices.

Today any divisive action in the Islamic world is a historical sin. Those who maliciously use takfir to declare large groups of Muslims as unbelievers, those who insult the sanctities of various divisions of Islam, those who betray and put a dagger in the back of the Lebanese youth who are a source of honour for the Muslim ummah, those who speak of the fabricated threat of a Shiite crescent in order to please the Americans and the Zionists, those who incite fratricidal hostilities and lawlessness in Iraq to defeat its Islamic and popular government, and those who put pressure on the elected HAMAS government in Palestine, whether intentionally or unintentionally, will be regarded as culprits, detested by history and future generations and looked upon as mercenaries of the brutal enemy.

Muslims all over the world must know that the era of humiliation and backwardness of the Islamic world has come to an end. We are all witnessing the coming of a new era. The flawed frame of mind that Muslim countries will remain enthralled in the cultural and political claws of the West and will continue to emulate them in their individual and collective behaviours have been eradicated from the minds of Muslim masses by the hands of the Westerners themselves, and as the result of their excessive arrogance and conceit.

The concept of the west especially after being lad by the US, through its flagrant acts of oppression and endlessly arrogant and illogical behaviour, is now clearly seen as an anti-value in the Islamic world. Their treatment of the Palestinian people compared to their treatment of the bloodthirsty Zionist regime, their position with respect to the admission of the Zionist regime on possession of nuclear weapons, against their position on civilian use of nuclear energy by Iran, their support for military aggression against Lebanon and their defense for the aggressor, their hostility toward the defenders of Lebanon, who were prepared to sacrifice their lives, relentlessly blackmailing the western governments and constant surrender of the western governments to the demands of the Zionist regime, supporting insulters of sanctities of Islam and even open defamation of Islam by high-ranking authorities in the West, including the Pope, while making any inquiry into and questioning of Holocaust or the formation of the Zionist regime a punishable offence, military attacks against Iraq and Afghanistan and killing of civilian population under the name of democracy, while conspiring against democratic governments in Palestine, Iraq and in Latin America and in fact anywhere that their stooges do no come to power, all the hullabaloo on the war on terror while clandestinely talking with and supporting brutal terrorists in Iraq.

These irrational and malicious behaviours have provided clear proof to Muslim nations and have helped strengthen the Islamic awakening. Whether they like it or not, today a profound and deep-rooted movement has begun in the Islamic world. This movement will lead to the independence, dignity and rejuvenation of the Muslim ummah.

This is a decisive juncture in history. The elite and the intellectuals have a huge responsibility on their shoulders. Any weakness, wavering, misguided actions and negligence on their part will lead to disaster. Ulema should not remain silent in the face of divisive actions, the intellectuals should not shirk their responsibility to impart spirit of hope in our youth, and politicians and leaders should not distance themselves from the people and must rely on them. And the Islamic governments should strengthen their ranks and solidarity and use the power of the people to overcome the threats of the domineering powers.

Today the intelligence services of the U.S. and Britain in Iraq, Lebanon and in countries of North Africa, and wherever they can, are spreading the virus of religious division and discord. The congregation of hajj keeps us immune from this deadly virus and places this sacred verse of Koran in our full view: And obey Allah and His Apostle and do not quarrel for then you will be weak in hearts and your power will depart, and be patient; surely Allah is with the patient. Surah VIII: 46

Today distancing ourselves from moshrekin is the heartfelt desire and the call of all Muslim nations. The season of hajj is the only opportunity when this desire can be expressed with full force.

Let us seize this opportunity to pray for Allah's grace and favour on all hajj pilgrims and pray for the earliest coming of the Promised Mahdi(A.S.) Cleanse yourselves in this vast ocean. I pray for your success and happiness and for the acceptance of your hajj.

Sayyid Ali Khamenei

3rd of Dhulhajja 1427 – 3rd of Dey 1385

The Eid Festival Around The World - Graphic Photos

The Eid Festival

arrival in March 2005.

The UN Children's Fund UNICEF drafted an internal report detailing the problem, it said.

The newspaper said Sudan's government had gathered evidence including video footage of UN workers having sex with young girls.

But the UN had yet to publicly acknowledge there was a problem or even investigate, the newspaper said.

The UN, working with the African Union, is now pressing the Sudanese government to admit thousands more peacekeepers to its western Darfur region, where a separate civil war has raged for three years.

The government has been resisting letting the reinforcements into Darfur, calling it an attempt to recolonise the vast northern African nation.

Sexual abuse charges have surfaced for decades in UN peacekeeping missions and among civilian and other humanitarian staff operating in world hot spots.

But the UN began seriously pursuing offenders in the past two years after reports of widespread abuse in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where it has 17,000 troops.

Since January 2004, the UN has investigated abuse allegations against 319 military and civilian personnel in all its missions, the world body said in late November.

It has disciplined 179 soldiers, civilians and police since then but acknowledges minors and the poor are still exploited.

Defensive calf named after US president

Defensive calf named after US president

January 03, 2007

A TWO-year-old calf that escaped slaughter at an abattoir in Mumbai for a Muslim festival has been named George after the US president, a report said today.

George bolted and ran into a scrapyard where he kept butchers at bay for 20 hours, the Times of India reported.

The calf was finally rescued yesterday by the Bombay Society For Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which adopted him and named him George, after US President George W Bush, the report said.

"George is certainly a very lucky survivor as it is very difficult for any animal to escape the 'death camp' were among 10 fighters arrested by Kenyan police, according to separate reports Tuesday.

The 10 were arrested on Monday at the Liboi border crossing in Kenya as they tried to flee Somalia, the Kenya Daily Nation reported.

Two were reportedly carrying Canadian passports, while the remaining eight were said to have Eritrean passports. According to the newspaper, all 10 militants were being detained in the Kenyan town of Garissa. It is not known whether they have been charged.

A Canadian Press report, however, said only one man with a Canadian passport had been detained. The report quotes Kenya police spokesman Gideon Kibunja.

"It's difficult to judge if they are Islamic Courts fighters, but a number of them were Eritrean and one had a Canadian passport," Kibunja said.

Foreign Affairs officials in Canada told CBC News on Tuesday that they were aware of the Kenya Daily Nation report, but they would not comment until they had more information.

Officials at the Canadian High Commission in Nairobi said they were trying to get information from Kenyan police about the arrests, but they have not had much success.

"Consular officials are aware of the arrest on the Kenya-Somalia border," said Ian McKinley, a counsellor with the High Commission. "We are actively investigating whether Canadian nationals were detained in order to provide them with consular help."

Canada has issued a travel warning urging Canadians not to travel to Somalia, or if there already, to leave immediately.

10 stopped while fleeing in vehicle

According to the Kenya Daily Nation, Kenyan security forces suspect that the 10 fighters helped to finance the Council of Islamic Courts, an Islamic movement that has been driven out of Somalia by government forces backed by Ethiopian troops.

The Islamists abandoned their last stronghold in Kismayo, 500 kilometres south of the capital Mogadishu, on Monday.

Police stopped the 10 militants as they tried to flee Somalia in a four-wheel-drive vehicle. All were arrested hours after the Islamists fled their last stronghold.

The Islamists were being detained at divisional police headquarters and will be interrogated by Kenya's Anti-Terrorism Police Unit and National Intelligence Security Service, the newspaper reported.

Kenya, meanwhile, said it has sealed part of its border to ensure no fighters will cross.

Thousands of Islamists abandoned Mogadishu last Thursday after troops backed by Ethiopia's military advanced toward them. They had occupied the capital for six months.

Fighters have fled for Kenya and the southern hills of Somalia, and have threatened to fight back using guerrilla tactics.

Ethiopia likely to pull troops within weeks: Gedi

Ali Mohamed Gedi, Somalia's prime minister, said the Islamists have been scattered, and he thinks the fighting is largely over. He said Ethiopia would likely pull its troops out within weeks.

Gedi said he wants the country to disarm, and ordered a three-day period for Somalis across the country to surrender their weapons voluntarily at points set up by the government.
